A year has passed. A whole year in New York City! Where has the time gone? I have no idea. It feels like only yesterday that we were driving through the Lincoln Tunnel and fighting traffic on 34th street, trying to make our way to our new apartment in Herald Square. Living a whole year in our tiny little studio (‘the shoebox’). Monica was an intern at Columbia Presbyterian and I worked as a temp at Sullivan & Cromwell and did photography on the side for www.broadwayworld.com. I thought the best way to remember our year in New York would be to create a post with all my favorite photos from this past year and countdown our favorite places to eat, our favorite shows and our favorite places to hang out! So here we go… a year in New York City the roundup:
Favorite Places to Eat
10. Crif Dogs
09. Johns Pizzeria / 2 Bros. Pizza
08. Cafe Con Leche
07. Pinkberry
06. Sugar Sweet Sunshine / Crumbs Bakery
05. La Mela
04. Pommes Frites
03. S’mac
02. El Centro
01. Shake Shack
Favorite Shows
07. Shrek
06. Twelfth Night / Shakespeare in Central Park
05. In The Heights – This show’s older so it shouldn’t count, but we went to Lin-Manuel’s final performance which was a special night.
04. [title of show]
03. Hair
02. Rent (Closing Night) – History. We witnessed it. Incredible night.
01. Next To Normal – The most amazing show / score / performance (Alice Ripley) I’ve seen in years.
Favorite Places to Hang Out / Fun Activities / Events
10. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – literally right in front of our house, I missed the parade because I was lazy and wanted to sleep, but Monica woke up early and braved the crowds to watch the parade. They block off our entire street. Once you leave the apartment you cant get back in for a few hours.
09. Broadway @ Bryant Park – Every Wednesday afternoon for 4 weeks in the summer, all of Broadway’s biggest shows perform for FREE in Bryant Park! Pull up a lawn chair and relax. Fun times.
08. The MET – After visiting NYC for years we finally went to the MET and it was beyond incredible. My favorite spot is the large glass room that holds the Temple of Dendur.
07. Karaoke 17 – OK yes its cheesy. But one too many Red Bull’s with Vodka, fun friends and a colorful disco ball and you’ve got yourself a party. Trust me!
06. Rowing in Central Park – One of our favorite NYC activities. For about $10 you can rent a row boat at the Boathouse and row your way through the Central Park lakes. It’s a blast.
05. St. Marks Place in The East Village – It’s grungy, it’s dirty, it’s loud – but every friggin’ restaurant and trendy little boutique store / vintage shop / tattoo parlor is on St. Marks Place. I would love to go to the old record stores and look for cheap / rare CD’s. And then you could get a tattoo two stores down – which we did!
04. The Brooklyn Pier / Park – Such a relaxing place to sit and enjoy the majestic Manhattan skyline. Then you can enjoy some Grimaldi’s pizza or the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.
03. The Bronx Zoo – Simply put, the most amazing zoo I have ever been to in my whole life. Go visit!
02. Central Park / The Gastow Bridge / The Mall / Bethesda Terrace – There is no better place to hang out in New York than Central Park. It is the most beautiful park you will ever see and there is so much to do there! You can go to Bethesda Terrace and relax with a book. You can walk the mall and people watch. Visit John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ memorial ‘Strawberry Fields’. Run around the Jackie O Reservoir. Go to the Central Park Zoo! There is just so much to do in the park… it feels like you leave New York and enter another world.
01. Election night! – Probably our best memory while living in New York. We watched the returns from Election Plaza in front of Rockefeller Center. And celebrated with thousands of New Yorkers when Obama was elected. We witnessed history while living in New York and in a very exciting way. Right smack in the middle of the world!
